Watching the devastation of Hurricane Harvey has surely opened my eyes, heart and soul to becoming as prepared as possible if a natural disaster hits. It’s never, too early to be prepared!
Just remember to include your pets in preparation. The American Red Cross recommends 3 key tips to keeping your pet safe during a disaster:
1.If it’s not safe for you to stay in your home, it’s not safe for your pets either!
2. Include supplies for your pets in your emergency kit or create one for your pet
3. Make an evacuation plan for you and your pets. Plan for pet friendly hotels, and services that accept pets
We’ve gathered a list of suggestions and items from some of our favorite sites and what they recommend having in your Pet Preparedness Kit, well, we might have added a few extra’s.
At least a 3-5-day supply in airtight, waterproof container, bowl
At least a 3-5-day supply, keep in mind their size and consumption per day, bowl
Medicines and Important Records:
I recommend taking photos of everything, (vaccinations, licenses, proof of ownership, microchip information, etc) as a backup along with copies or originals in airtight, waterproof containers
Basic First Aid Kit:
Cotton bandage Rolls, bandage tape, antibiotic ointment, baby wipes, Benadryl, flea or tick meds, hydrogen peroxide to disinfect a wound or induce vomiting, phone numbers of vet and closest emergency pet clinic
Extra Collar and Leash:
Include an identity tag with your pet’s name, phone number and include an alternate contact
Extras to share are always helpful
A picture of you and your pup in case you become separated, keep in a waterproof bag
Favorite Treat or toy
Blanket, something with your scent, or a familiar toy
While we hope we’re never in a situation like our friends in Texas, or those battling the fires in the Washington, Oregon and California, it never hurts to be prepared. If not for yourself, think of your loved ones and those that depend on you, including your pets!
